RE: Allusion Performs at NYC’s Lincoln Center
Allusion Performs at NYC’s Lincoln Center
May 8, 2003
Missouri Baptist University’s vocal jazz/pop ensemble, Allusion, performed in NYC Vocal Jazz Festival at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York and participated in a three day educational workshop April 27-30. Allusion joined vocal jazz ensembles from Ft. Indiana, Arkansas and New Jersey, and the featured Gold Company from Western Michigan University.
During the educational workshop, Allusion’s eight members learned from the internationally recognized vocal jazz educator Dr. Stephen Zegree, director of Gold Company and author of The Complete Guide to Teaching Vocal Jazz. Allusion was also instructed by guest conductor Duane Davis and New York Voices founder Darmon Meador. Meador is considered one of the premier vocalists, arrangers and saxophonists in jazz today.
Allusion’s workshop and performance in New York was a great learning experience for the ensemble and an occasion to be entertained and challenged by vocal jazz contemporaries.
Director Pat Lacey says, “Jazz is a very sharing, giving experience. Most experienced jazz soloists would sit with a beginner and invite them to experiment with a piece.”
To a full house in Alice Tully Hall, Allusion performed Gershwin’s “I Got Rhythm” and Craig Curry gospel favorite “No Night There” for their solo performance. After the individual presentations, the Combined Festival Chorus sang "Blue Skies" by Irving Berlin, "Try to Remember" from The Fantasticks, an arrangement of Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind", and concluded with Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Waters." Two Allusion members, Seth Carruthers and Philip Giacomelli, were chosen as Festival Chorus soloists.
Allusion performs throughout the St. Louis area and is featured in a spring music tour. They are accompanied by a traditional jazz combo of piano, bass and drums. Members include Jennifer Broombaugh, Leah Sherman, Heather Wilson, Lauren Belding, Seth Carruthers, Keith McRoberts, Philip Giacomelli, Kent Tipton, Judy Henderson, Joe Simino, Leann Thompson.
