Record Number Receive Degrees at Thirty-first Commencement

May 2, 2003

Three hundred eighty-one graduates were eligible to receive their diploma Saturday, April 26, during Missouri Baptist University’s thirty-first commencement ceremony.

Nearly 4,000 people attended the event that featured Executive Director of the Association of Southern Baptist Colleges and Schools Dr. Bob R. Agee, as the keynote speaker.

Describing the key to an effective life as the commitment to lifelong learning and to excellence in every arena, Agee ended with this charge to the students: “Don't be content with your world as it is. Dare to learn, dare to go, dare to try to impact your world for Christ.”

President R. Alton Lacey and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Arlen Dykstra presided over the commencement ceremony that honored the 381 people awarded degrees this academic year, a record 96 receiving their Master of Science in Education degrees. Undergraduate degrees include Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Professional Studies, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and Associate of Science.

Dr. Lacey also presented Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biology Dr. Donald R. Colborn with this year’s Distinguished Teaching Award. The award is designed to annually recognize a professor with outstanding dedication and enthusiasm. Colborn, who began teaching at MBU in 1997, was also awarded the 2002 Emerson Award for Excellence in Teaching this past year.
