RE: Women's Soccer and Basketball Head Coaches Appointed
Women's Soccer and Basketball Head Coaches Appointed
May 1, 2003
Missouri Baptist University Athletic Director Tom Smith has announced the hiring of former Trinity International University women's basketball coach Danny J. Wingate and women's soccer coach Juan Mares as head women's basketball coach and head women's soccer coach, respectively, for the Spartans.
Wingate comes to MBU after serving two seasons as head coach of TIU from 2000-2003 and brings prior coaching experience from Judson College (IL, IL).
Wingate received his B.A. in Communications from Malone College in Canton, Ohio and will earn his M.A. in Higher Education this summer from Geneva College (PA). While at Malone, Wingate made both All-Time Scoring (+1000) and All-Time Rebounders lists completing 605 rebounds in 100 games. Wingate will also serve MBU as sports information director and education instructor.
"We are particularly excited to have a young, aggressive coach in Danny, to build the women's program. I was impressed with his four point philosophy of team over individual, long term over short term, inside over outside, and servant leadership over all," says Smith.
Breaking over fifty school records and guiding the Cougars in their best seasons, Mares compiled the highest coach's winning percentage in the history of El Dorado High School women's soccer. Juan has also coached at the collegiate level at Santa Ana College and Biola University.
Mares received his B.A. in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, California. He will complete his M.S. in Kinesiology, with an emphasis on Biomechanics and Sports Psychology this summer from California State University at Fullerton. At MBU, Mares will also serve as instructor of natural science.
"Juan holds a NSCAA "Advance National" coaching license and brings seventeen years of experience. Juan will capitalize on coach Favero's former success and will take our program to the next level," says Smith.
This past year, MBU's women's soccer program ended their season ranked thirteenth in the nation with a 17-3-2 record. The 2002 Lady Spartans collected three of four major AMC awards, the conference championship, along with a string of broken MBU records.
