Holden Appoints President Lacey to Academic Resource Team

April 11, 2003

Governor Bob Holden named Dr. R. Alton Lacey, president of Missouri Baptist University, as one of twelve members to the Academic Resource Team which will serve in an advisory role to the newly-created Commission on the Future of Higher Education.

Constituents of the Academic Resource Team are selected from the academic community to provide technical and policy-related information and other assistance as requested by the commission in fulfilling its mission.

Holden created the commission to make recommendations on how Missouri can strengthen the link between higher education and economic growth in the state. Strengthening education and workforce skills are a key component of Holden’s job growth plan, Missouri@Work. In addition, the commission’s work will benefit a national effort as Missouri is the first to be chosen to help states improve higher education policies.

“It is important that the commission have someone from the higher education community to use as a resource,” states Commissioner of Higher Education Quentin Wilson.

The newly-appointed commission will meet for the first time Monday, April 14, to recommend ways to improve higher education overall in Missouri by examining five major focus areas: preparation, participation, affordability, completion and benefits.

The Commission on the Future of Higher Education will report its recommendations and strategies to the Governor, The Speaker of the Missouri House of Representatives, the President Pro Tem of the Senate, the members of the Coordinating Board for Higher Education, the Commissioner of Higher Education, the Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Director of the Department of Economic Development.

Dr. R. Alton Lacey is actively serving three additional leadership roles as chair of the board of the Association of Southern Baptist Colleges and Schools, president of Independent Colleges and Universities of Missouri, and as a member of the Committee on Transfer and Articulation for the Coordinating Board of Higher Education in Missouri.
