RE: SIFE@MBU Goes Global
SIFE@MBU Goes Global
March 20, 2003
Missouri Baptist University’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) organization is joining with Soldan International Studies High School for its International Multicultural Week Fair on March 21. As a part of SIFE National Free Market Economics Month, eighteen MBU students and two faculty members have been working with Soldan students to teach how free markets work in the global economy.
For the past month the SIFE@MBU team has worked with students in six different classes to prepare them for the fair, teaching them about Free Market Economics. SIFE@MBU students divided the Soldan students into teams and each team represented a country (United States, Italy, Mexico, Kenya, Russia, Japan, China and Great Britain), with one team designated to serve as the International Currency Exchange Bank.
Soldan students were then challenged to learn as much as possible about their countries and prepare to staff a booth and share this information with visitors to the Multicultural Fair. On the day of the fair, guests will have an opportunity to purchase something from each booth using currency that they will receive from the Currency Exchange Bank. Students must know and understand the exchange rate in order to make the purchases.
This has been an extensive project that collectively, SIFE@MBU students have spent hundreds of hours planning and implementing. Soldan teachers and administrators have invited the SIFE team to continue working with the students on future projects as well. Mrs. Brenda Bradford, MBU SIFE Director and Soldan graduate, said, “We are proud of the work and enthusiasm of the students. They were challenged and they met that challenge with exuberance.”
