Dr. Vasantha Wilfred, Professor of Mathematics at Missouri Baptist University, has been selected for the 2002 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching for her commitment to students through Christian education. Reflection of her own personal faith and high standards of excellence are shown through her teaching and advising with students.
Dr. Wilfred received her Ph.D. and M.S. from Bangalore University, India, and received her B.A. from Delhi University, India- all in Mathematics. She taught in India for twenty-two years before coming to the United States. In her tenth year of teaching, Dr. Wilfred considers it a blessing to teach at Missouri Baptist University since 1993.
“I enjoy the new challenges with new students, not only teaching math, but having an influence on their lives by letting them know the joy of being a Christian, even if it is only for one semester,” says Wilfred.
Math Major Kurt Lehmann stated, “Dr. Wilfred is a teacher who has a genuine compassion for her students and their learning. Her cultural background brings much diversity to the classroom and provides for real life discussions”.
Governor Bob Holden will present the award on December 4, 2002, in the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Jefferson City.
