RE: Esther Burroughs Speaks at Staley Lectures
Esther Burroughs Speaks at Staley Lectures
February 15, 2002
A woman of wisdom, Esther Burroughs, founder and director of Treasures of the Heart, speaks to women, college groups, and senior adults around the country. Burroughs brought a fresh look at dating and relationships to the campus of Missouri Baptist College as guest speaker for the 2002 Staley Lecture Series held February 12-14.
Burroughs first discovered her gift for speaking while her husband was a youth pastor. She sat up with the girls during retreats talking to them about issues they faced. One student asked her to speak to her YMCA club. By the end of that year Burroughs had spoken at every YMCA club in the city. Her newfound gift turned into a desire to share her heart with others to encourage an intimate acquaintance with Jesus Christ.
MBC students listened as Burroughs brought Scripture and life experiences to the topics of love, marriage, and family. "It takes three for a successful marriage," shared Burroughs as she encouraged students to keep God at the forefront of all their relationships. In addition to her three-day lecture series, she participated in a dinner session at the residence halls and an afternoon social. The Burroughs invited MBC communications students to assist them in producing a promotional video for their ministry.
Previously Burroughs worked with the Southern Baptist Convention Home Mission Board (currently North American Mission Board) as an evangelist for women. She has authored several books including Empowered, A Garden Path to Mentoring, and Splash the Living Water. Her husband, Bob, a nationally recognized music consultant also, visited MBC with his wife and spoke to music classes throughout the week.
The Staley Lecture Series is held annually at MBC. The series, a product of the Thomas F. Staley Foundation of New York, is held at various institutions around the country. Its purpose is to provide college campuses with meaningful and timely lectures that proclaim the Gospel of Christ. “We continue the Staley Lectures because we want to expose students to excellent ministry by persons who will inspire and stretch us spiritually and intellectually,” explains Dr. Andy Chambers, Dean of Students.
