RE: Trustees Change Charter

Trustees Change Charter

August 23, 2001

In a regularly scheduled meeting, the Missouri Baptist College Board of Trustees voted to change the institution's Charter. The alterations give greater authority to the College in the selection of its trustees while at the same time strengthening covenant ties between the College and Missouri Baptist Convention.

Missouri Baptist College president Alton Lacey explained, "Our Board wanted to ensure that its members have the College and its mission as the singular motivation for board service. This change will allow us to preserve the core values and essential qualities of the College while continuing to meet the educational needs of all our constituents."

Two primary concerns are addressed by the changes. The first is the removal of the College from the political uncertainties and unrest surrounding the Missouri Baptist Convention. The second is the danger of ascending or descending liability that could make the College liable in a lawsuit brought against any other agency or institution of the Convention. The new Charter alleviates these concerns.

"Due to our commitment to the Convention, the Board has adopted a new covenant which signifies our steadfast dedication to Missouri Baptists and Christian education," notes Randy Fullerton, Chairman of the Board. The covenant, based on the "Christian Higher Education: A Statement of Purpose," adopted by the Missouri Baptist Convention in 1976, redefines the responsibility of each party in the selection of Board members. The covenant represents the binding promise both institutions have made to Christian higher education.

The Board also charged Dr. Lacey to chair a special trustee committee to convene with Convention leaders and express the Board's desire to continue in partnership and to strengthen the existing relationship. Missouri Baptist College is located in Saint Louis and has extensions in Franklin County, Jefferson County, and Troy/Wentzville. Established in 1964, MBC currently enrolls more than 3000 students for bachelor and graduate programs of study. Dr. R. Alton Lacey has served as the College's sixth president since 1995. The MBC Board of Trustees consists of twenty-seven members, over seventy-five percent of whom are pastors or laity from Missouri Baptist churches.
