RE: Students Teaching Students

Students Teaching Students

February 16, 2001

Fourth grade teacher, Mr. Monet smiled as he observed the inverted roles Margaret Jackson, who was his student ten years before, was teaching his class while he watched from the sidelines. During February's Teach a Child About Business Week, Margaret returned to Farragut Elementary with twenty-five other Missouri Baptist College students participating in SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise).

Teach a Child About Business Week encourages college SIFE teams to develop a program for children grades K-12 to further their comprehension of the free enterprise system by increasing awareness of how business impacts our daily lives.

The MBC SIFE team taught 160 third, forth, and fifth grade students from the Mid-St. Louis City schools, including eight classes at Farragut Elementary and two at the neighboring Beaumont High School.

With an imaginative style, MBC students tailored lesson plans to reach each specific age level. Fifth grade presenters used the "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" game show to animate the principles of savings, scarcity, opportunity, and money management.

As MBC visited Farragut for the second consecutive year, they were able to review and continue from where they left off last February. The innovative MBC team presented their teaching projects at the 2000 SIFE Regional Exposition. Judges, who were CEO's and nationwide business executives, recognized the team with the "Rookie of the Year Award" and "First Runner-up" for their project with the school children.

These recent projects are like the tip of an iceberg-they reveal only a small portion of their plans for building a program with the St. Louis school system. "This SIFE team is impressive and I know they will make a positive difference in the community," says Brenda Bradford, a veteran Sam Walton Fellow who has led two separate teams to the SIFE Regional Competition.

Later this month, SIFE plans to take Beaumont High School students to the elementary school to turn the tables once again. These eleventh grade students will have the opportunity to teach the lessons they have learned

"Giving back what was once given to me," explains Margaret from her forth grade classroom, "that's what it is all about."
