RE: MBC Students Attend Governor's Leadership Forum
MBC Students Attend Governor's Leadership Forum
January 8, 2001
On Thursday, January 4, 2001, hundreds of Missourians gathered for the fourteenth annual Governor's Prayer Breakfast as politics took a spiritual spin. Reflecting on the Carnahan tragedy, Governor Wilson encouraged listeners to live every day to its fullest.
Among those in attendance were over a hundred college students from the annual Governor's Leadership Forum. The student forum focuses on the incorporation of faith and values in the role of leadership. During the three-day-event, college students had the opportunity to hear from professionals from across the country as they presented their testimonies concerning their faith in God, their careers, and the success found when the two were combined.
Jesus of Nazareth was this year's role leader and His leadership through servant hood was a specific emphasis. As an act of this principle, students visited the Jefferson City Correctional Center, a Hospice facility, and various children's programs, serving for several hours. "We rarely see politics in this spiritual light. It was truly refreshing and seemed a rarity after the political struggles we have witnessed this year," said Beau Bekemeier, a sophomore from Missouri Baptist College. Beau was one of seven Missouri Baptist College students who attended the leadership conference, along with Jennifer Baird, Andrea Firebaugh, Mike Hendren, David Kesselring, Greg Lawrence, and Jessica Voso.
While in the Capital City, the forum visited the Missouri Supreme Court, meeting with Chief Justice, William Ray Price, and Judge Michael Wolf. The forum also included a balcony view during Governor Wilson's farewell address, and dessert reception with the Governor and his wife, Pat, at the mansion.
The Governor-elect, Bob Holden, spoke at the conference's farewell breakfast. He reminded the students that they were the future of the state and their roles are vital in Missouri's well-being.
