RE: MBC SIFE Team To Help Children During Teach A Child About Business Week
MBC SIFE Team To Help Children During Teach A Child About Business Week
February 9, 2000
During the week of February 6-12, the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) from Missouri Baptist College (MBC) will help school children in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade gain an understanding of how business works as part of SIFE Teach A Child About Business Week. Developed by SIFE as a special competition, Teach A Child About Business Week encourages college SIFE Teams to develop a project or projects for children grades K-9 that further their comprehension of the free enterprise system by increasing their awareness of how businesses operate, responsible consumerism, professional opportunities and how business impacts our daily lives.
Active on more than 700 college campuses in 48 states and 15 countries, SIFE is a non-profit organization that works in partnership with business and higher education to help students take what they are learning in the classroom and apply it in real working situations to better themselves, their communities and their countries. The SIFE Teach a Child About Business Week special competition will award $13,500 to SIFE Teams with exceptional projects.
MBC - SIFE will go into Farragut Branch #1 Elementary school to teach three third grade classes, two fourth grade classes and two fifth grade classes the principles of responsible consumerism and free enterprise, emphasizing the concepts of opportunity costs, product substitution, and marginal cost in a creative and dynamic environment. "We are really moving in our first year," says Brenda Bradford, a veteran Sam Walton Fellow who has led two separate teams to the SIFE Regional Competition. "This team of students is impressive, and I know they will make a positive difference in the community."
"SIFE students have tremendous impact on the children they teach," said SIFE Chairman Mike Merriman, who is President and CEO of Royal Appliances/Dirt Devil, Inc. "They show them new ways to look at and understand the role of business in their communities and the world. In some cases, they light that spark of enthusiasm that will impact a child's future."
Now celebrating its 25th year, SIFE provides college students the opportunities to make a difference and to develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills through learning, practicing and teaching the principles of free enterprise.
