PERCENT VS. %
In copy that contains many numbers and in non-narrative copy where space is
at a premium, use %. In other copy, use percent.
At VS. @
Reserve the symbol "@" for e-mail notation and never use it to replace
"at" in text.
AND VS. &
Do not use the ampersand except in titles such as company names in which the
symbol actually appears and in non-narrative copy where space is extremely
limited.
X VS. BY
Do not use x to mean by (i.e., a ten-by-twelve-foot room). The obvious exception
is when noting measurements for printing, construction, or similar trade's
specific notation (i.e., 8.5x11" or 2x4").
NUMBER VS. #
Never use # for Number. Use the abbreviation No. when necessary; but it is
often superfluous. The obvious exception is in the course schedule.
