ITALICIZE
1. Names of periodicals, books, newspapers, plays, movies, paintings, drawings, musical compositions (longer than a song), and book-length poems. (Articles in periodicals and chapters in books are enclosed in quotation marks.) Periodicals include those produced at the University (Campus News, etc.). In citing periodicals, be sure to italicize only the actual title, not the article that precedes it.
Examples: the MBU Magazine; the New York Times
2. Unfamiliar foreign words
Example: She said she would be dining with her caro sposo.
3. Names of performance groups
Example: Spirit Wing
4. Names of court cases
Example: People v. Gacy
When italic type is not available, substitute underlining
DO NOT ITALICIZE
Do not italicize familiar, often-used foreign words or phrases, including such Latin phrases as cum laude, alma mater, ad hoc, amicus curiae, ad lib, in vivo, in vitro, etc. When in doubt, check the dictionary.
