Below is a list of recommended software applications. This list was compiled to answer the frequent requests the Office receives concerning various design packages. The recommended applications are those that we use or can attest to their benefitial use in your graphic needs. WE DO NOT PROVIDE APPLICATION SUPPORT. Contact IT if you need help ordering, installing, or using software.
University Communications does not support filetypes other than those produced or imported by the following applications. We do not export files for inclusion in applications other than those listed below.
Adobe
PhotoShop
Adobe PhotoShop
Elements
Both of these packages are great rasterized image editors and the former is
considered the industry standard for use in print and web publishing. The
former is used by University Communications and recommended for users that require extensive options,
batch processing, etc. The PS Elements is a more basic -- albiet powerful
-- version of PhotoShop and recommended for most every other department as
lower cost option.
Adobe
InDesign
InDesign is used by University Communications instead of Quark Xpress. There are various reasons
for use of this application, but Xpress is generally considered the industry
standard. We do not recommend PageMaker, MS Publisher, Print Shop, or other
low-end layout packages. Frankly, if you are working in this area of design,
you should be working in a professional package, or outsource your needs.
Adobe
Illustrator
Macromedia Freehand
Freehand is used by University Communications, but both are fully compatable with eachother and
both are considered standard applications for vector-based design. Any departments
using these applications are venturing into more professional work and they
are not recommended for general graphic use.
Macromedia
DreamWeaver
The defacto web publishing package, DreamWeaver is required for any departments
approved to maintain their own web presence. There are dozens of other options
available, but due to compatability and logistical issues, none of the options
are acceptable in the MBU web environment. Absolutely no pages are to be
created with MS Word or FrontPage.
