MBC: Did you both study music in college?
N: We both went to Oklahoma Baptist University and I started as a theory and composition major and ended up with a music education degree.
C: I was in vocal performance and then we got married. I always said that I would go back and I never did. We started traveling and this is what I wanted to do.
MBC: How did you make the transition from leading worship at Metro (a collegiate Bible study in Texas) to doing what you do now?
N: It was through our involvement in the Passion conferences - Louie Giglio heads them up - we were involved in Passion 97 and there was a guy there from First Baptist Houston that was helping out with Passion 97. They had just signed a record deal and he heard one of our independent CD's and asked us to travel with them
C: We did that for about a year and a half and the Bible study was already going strong, and our label, Rocketown, heard about it. A lot of people think that the way to get a record deal is to bang down doors in Nashville, but I think it's about making a stir where you are and that's what Metro was for us. The label heard about it and they wanted Chris Rice, one of their artists to come through at Metro and they ended up meeting Steve (who Nathan was talking about) and it was history from there.
MBC: Do you have a certain bond with the college crowd?
C: Yeah, I think so. With high school students, it's a little bit harder to get them to focus in and listen to our music. We like to share stories of where the songs came from and it just seems like college is I love that age spiritually because it was a time in my life when I got away from mom and dad and realized that I need to believe what I believe and not what mom and dad have always taught me. It was a monumental time in my life, kind of a stake in the ground time when I said this is what I'm gonna believe. It's a great time for change in their life and in their spiritual walk and college kids allow us to share more.
MBC: What would be your message to college students?
C: We have a song called Where to Find Me and it's probably our favorite to sing and share. It comes from 2 Chronicles 16:9 - "For the eyes of the LORD roam to and fro throughout the whole earth to seeking to show Himself strong to those whose hearts are blameless towards Him." Whether we are in the lowest valley that we've ever been in or on top of a mountain rejoicing if it's a good season in life, God always knows where to find us. We all have wounds from our past that we can either choose to live with or we can allow Jesus to heal them. A lot of times we search for other things and other people to heal us, but God always knows where to find you. In college you start realizing your talents and purpose for your life. Every detail about that verse, that he is seeking to show himself strong to those whose hearts are blameless towards him, can apply to me today. But the only way I'm going to find that out is to turn my heart towards him.
MBC: What are some of the perks about being married and being together in this ministry?
N: The perks are that we get to be together as a family with our 15-month old little boy. There are a lot of people in the business - even the guys in the band - who have to leave wives and kids in order to travel around. I can't imagine that; it would be hard. Right now our home is the bus, but we make it our home.
C: I like being able to bounce ideas off of Nathan and he knows where I'm coming from. It's really neat to know that we are both so passionate about the same things.
MBC: Do you write together, separately, or a little of both?
N: Christy writes the words and we both write the music. We sit around and write a lot of thoughts down here and there and the songs just come together. A big part is surrounding ourselves with people who all want the same thing when we're out here - not so much to further this or that person's career, but they're kind of our family when we go out so spending time together is important. Christy wrote a devotional that each of us does before the concert-then we talk about it and have a designated person to pray for that day. We're like a little church community.
