Baseball Splits Double Header with Union

The Missouri Baptist University baseball team split a double header with Union University at MBU on Wednesday. Union prevailed in the opener 3-2, while the Spartans took the nightcap 12-4.

Senior right hander Blake Kearney allowed only two hits in the contest, but the Spartan defense committed 5 errors in the first three innings to surrender three unearned runs. The Spartans recorded only four hits in the game.

In the second game, the Spartans trailed 2-1, entering the bottom of the second inning, when they exploded for six runs. The big blows were Brandon Patek’s bases loaded single that scored two, followed by a three-run homerun from Scott Talbert. Talbert, the American Midwest Player of the Week, also hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first.

Talbert finished the game 3-for-4 with four runs batted in. Francisco Vega went 2-for-3, Michael Mokriy was 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Joel Johnson added a solo home run in the fifth. Freshman Jared Carlson added a two-out two RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. The single was Jared’s first collegiate hit and RBI.

The Spartans are currently receiving votes in the NAIA national poll. They were ranked as high as 20th last week, before dropping two games to AMC rival McKendree University on Friday. MBU is currently 22-10 overall and 6-2 in conference. The Spartans will travel to Walnut Ridge, Arkansas for a four game AMC series with Williams Baptist College on Friday and Saturday.
