Baseball Sweeps HSSU in Four Games

The Missouri Baptist University baseball team picked up four wins in its first American Midwest Conference games of the season this weekend. The games, scheduled for home, were all played at Harris-Stowe State University on Friday and Saturday, due to poor field conditions at MBU. The wins improve the Spartan overall record to 17-7, 4-0 in the AMC.

In Friday play, the Spartans won game one of the double header 5-1. Cody Poche’ pitched into the sixth inning for his third victory of the season. Clayton Dill got the last four outs for his first save of the season. At the plate, Riley Gavello went 2-for-4, scoring two runs and driving in one RBI. Scott Talbert went 2-for-4 with one RBI, and Price Kendall went 2-for-3, scoring three runs, hitting one RBI, and stealing two bases.

The Spartans dominated game two of Friday's double header, shutting out the Hornets 8-0. Senior Aaron Byington threw a complete game, two-hit shutout. He struck out five to extend his perfect record to 4-0 on the season. The MBU offense exploded for six runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth. Joel Johnson led the charge going 2-for-4 with a double, a triple one RBI and two runs scored. Francisco Vega followed, hitting 2-for-4, four RBI and 2 runs. Price Kendall went 2-for-3, with three runs scored, one RBI, and one stolen base.

The Spartans won game one on Saturday 8-4. MBU jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings and never looked back. Matt Murray pitched a complete game to bump his record to 3-2 on the season. The offense was led by Junior Jacob Myking. Myking was 2-for-3 at the plate, and Francisco Vega was 1-for-2 with two RBI.

MBU again shut out HSSU 3-0 in game two. Senior Right hander Derik Drewett pitched a complete game, one-hit shutout. No HSSU runner reached third base and only one Hornet runner reached second. Drewett added five strikeouts to improve his record to 2-1. The Spartan offense was led by Scott Talbert and Jacob Myking. Talbert was 2-for-3 with one run scored and Myking was 1-for-2 with two RBI.
