MBU Basketball Teams Both Win at Home
In the opening game at Muncy Gymnasium on Saturday, the Missouri Baptist University women’s basketball team picked up a 74-70 overtime win over Williams Baptist College. The Lady Spartans trailed by 12 with three minutes to go in regulation, but came back, managing to tie the game with :16 to go on two free-throws made by Nikia Henry. The Lady Spartans outscored the Lady Eagles 7 to 3 in overtime to secure the win. The Lady Spartans improve to 6-6 in the American Midwest Conference, 11-15 overall. They are currently ranked 4th in the AMC.
Nikia Henry led the Lady Spartans with 30 points (7 3-point field goals)and 3 assists. Julie Leach added 17 points, 15 rebounds, and 4 assists.
The MBU men's basketball team followed the Lady Spartans with a big win of their own, defeating Williams Baptist 84-55. The Spartans improve to 4-7 in the AMC, 6-21 overall. The win bumped MBU up from 7th place in the AMC to a current standing of 5th.
Five Spartans scored in double digits. Freshman James Hicks came up big with 18 points and 18 boards. Jason Fry contributed 15 points off 3 three-pointers. Bret Wilson and Brandon Bishop each added 11 points, and Geoffry Grant chipped in 10.
Coming up this week...
The Spartans will be on the road at the University of Illinois at Springfield for a re-scheduled contest on Monday. They will then be at Harris-Stowe State University on Thursday, and will wrap up the AMC regular season at home against UIS again on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
The Lady Spartans will take on AMC leader HSSU at their place on Tuesday, and will have a re-match versus UIS at home at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
