MBU Baseball Splits Friday Games
Because of weather and scheduling issues, the Spartan baseball team traveled form Lebanon, Tennessee, where they were scheduled to play Union University on Friday, to Montgomery, Alabama to get three more games in this weekend.
The Spartans faced off against the Eagles of Faulkner University and Georgetown College at Faulkner University.
The Spartans lost the first game of the day to Faulkner 4-0. The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings. The Spartans battled back with single tallies in the top of the fifth and the top of the seventh. The Spartans had the bases loaded in the top of the seventh with no outs. They hit into a double play and ground out to end the threat.
The Spartan offense was led by Mike Mokriy who recorded two of the five Mobap hits. Senior Aaron Byington pitched well in the loss and sophomore Brandon Brokaw pitched two scoreless innings.
The Spartans picked up a 3-2 win over Georgetown College of Kentucky in the nightcap. The Spartans again let some scoring opportunities pass early and found themselves down 2-0 going to the bottom of the third inning. Scott Schneider got the Spartans on the board in the third. Schneider tripled with one out and scored on a wild pitch. Georgetown answered with a single tally in the top of the fourth to push the lead back to two. The Spartans answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Mike Mokriy reached second on a throwing error and scored on a two out base hit by junior catcher Jacob Myking.
The Spartans exploded for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good. Sophomore second baseman Dayne Dyer led of by getting hit by a pitch. After a Schneider fly out to wall in right field, senior shortstop Francisco Vega tripled down the right field line to plate Dyer with the tying run. On the next pitch, senior first baseman Scott Talbert laid down a beautiful suicide squeeze to plate Vega for the go ahead run while also reaching first base safely. After advancing to second base on a Brandon Patek single, both Talbert and Patek moved up a base on a wild pitch. Talbert then scored on a ground ball to the shortstop.
Scott Schneider and Joel Johnson had two hits each while Francisco Vega went1-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Junior right hander Cody Poche’ pitched well in his first start for the Spartans. Josiah Peacock pitched the top of the fifth and picked up his first win of the season. Junior Derek Mayer recorded the final six outs for his first save of the season.
The Spartans are now 1-2 on the season. They will play # 16 Auburn University-Montgomery Saturday morning @11:00 a.m.
