Spartans Lose Double Overtime Thriller to Columbia
The Missouri Baptist University Spartans dropped to 1-1 in American Midwest Conference play (3-15 overall) in a 69-62 double-overtime loss to the Columbia College Cougars on Saturday.
MBU led 8-2 early, but the Cougars went on a 16-0 run, and kept the momentum to halftime, taking a 30-14 advantage into the locker room. The Spartans outscored the Cougars 39-23 in the second half, pushing the game into overtime. A three-pointer at the buzzer by MBU's Brandon Bishop forced the game into the second overtime. The Cougars outscored the Spartans 9-2 in the second overtime to secure the win.
MBU shot a dismal 25.7% from the field and 56.7% from the free-throw line. Brandon Bishop led the Spartans with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Bret Wilson added 13 points.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Lady Spartans dropped to 6-9 overall (1-1 in the AMC) in a 84-72 loss to Columbia College (6-11 overall, 1-1 AMC).
MBU, averaging over 9 three-pointers per contest, managed to sink just 3 of 15. Julie Leach, in her second outing with the Lady Spartans, led the team with 27 points and ten rebounds, shooting 8 for 12 from the field and 11 for 11 from the charity stripe.
