Track Underclassmen Lead the Way for Spartans
This past weekend the Missouri Baptist Track and Field team competed at the Washington University Invite. The Spartan youngsters led the way with three freshmen and a sophomore garnering all five of the MBU individual event wins. Having the busiest couple of days of anyone in the meet, freshman LaShayla Bell was the number two collegian in the heptathlon scoring 4097 points, won the 100 meter hurdles in 14.77 seconds, won the 400 meter hurdles in 65.15 seconds, and ran a leg on the victorious 4x400 meter relay team. Freshman Chadiola Chumney who joined Bell on the 4x4 won the college 400 meter dash in a time of 57.57 seconds, and had a top five finish in the 200 meter dash as well. Natalee Dyke and Rachel Baldwin also were a part of the 4x4, with Baldwin also earning top four finishes in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Leading the charge in the distance races was another freshman, Meagan Hudson. Hudson set three personal records on her way to an event win the 5000 meter run (17:55), second in the 3000 meter steeplechase (11:08), and a top five finish in the 1500 meter dash (4:53). The other event win for the Spartans was by sophomore Kyle Proemsey. Proemsey won the high jump for the second week in a row. Setting personal bests a couple of times in the competition, Proemsey earned a national championships qualifier on his final make at 6'7". The Spartans also enjoyed several other key contributions throughout the competition. Middle distance standouts Steve Bender and Kenneth Kibii had a great day running several personal bests in the 800 and 1500 meter runs and the 4x400 meter relay. Sprinters Duran Brown and Fernando Edwards accounted for several top five finishes in the 100 - 400 meter dashes. Junior Vincent Morogah earned a national qualifying time in the 10000 meter run with his third place finish at 32:05. The Spartans return to the site of the 1904 Olympic Track and Field competition this week as they once again compete at Washington University's Francis Field.
