Spartan Track Roll to Victory in Indiana
The MBU Men’s Track and Field team won the DePauw Indoor Invitational. In a field of over 20 teams, the Spartans walked away with three event wins and numerous national qualifying times. The men’s distance medley relay of Vincent Morogah, Gentell Sykes, Anthony Freeman, and Steve Bender started the day off right with a win in a national qualifying time of 10:31.36. Sykes then turned around and won the 55 meter hurdles in 7.67. Kenneth Kibii continued the fireworks when he won the 1000 meter run tying the meet record at 2:32.79. Also earning top three finishes for the men were Denis-Bull Olinga in the 5000 meter run, Steve Bender in the 1000, Jamaury Harris in the long jump and the triple jump, and DeMarcus Bass in the high jump.
The MBU ladies finished second overall in the team competition and were once again led by sprint sensation Nickesha Anderson. Anderson anchored the 4x200 meter relay team with Coreen Ellis, Chadiola Chumney, and Rachel Baldwin to a winning time of 1:44.32, won the 55 meter dash in 7.06, won the 200 meter dash in 25.36, and anchored the same quartet as the 4x200 to the 4x400 meter relay title in 4:00.78. The women had a number of top three finishes on Saturday as well. LaShayla Bell in the 55 meter hurdles, Coreen Ellis and Chadiola Chumney in the 400 meter dash, Meagan Hudson in the 1000 meter and 3000 meter runs, and Dana Miller in the triple jump. Sprinter Rachel Baldwin also walked away with a national qualifying time in the 55 meter dash at 7.37.
The Spartans look to continue their winning ways this weekend at the Missouri All Comers meet.
