Men's Basketball Concludes Season With 23-9 Record
The Spartans concluded their season Thursday night falling at University of Illinois Springfield 101-89. The Spartans finish out the season with a 23-9 record. MBU finished fourth in the American Midwest Conference race with a record of 8-4. The Spartans hosted the first round of the conference tournament and pulled out a 59-56 win over the fifth seeded Trojans from Hannibal LaGrange College. MBU then traveled to top seeded UIS, where they have lost once before. MBU also fell to UIS at home in regular season action 70-65. Thursday’s showdown was played without All-Conference candidate Frank Penn, who sat the entire game due to a knee injury. MBU was ranked as high as number 11 in the NAIA National Polls. But a few key conference loses dropped the Spartans, who eventually fell out of the rankings. The Spartans have been plagued with injuries the entire year and Thursday’s season finale would be no different. In addition to Penn, MBU also played without starter Jimmy Cessna, who sustained a concussion against HLG. MBU second leading scorer, Joe Rothweiler, played the last eight games of the season with a broken wrist. The Spartans would take no excuses as they were still only one game out of first place in conference play.
The American Midwest All Conference Team will be released on the AMC website on Saturday March, 4th.
