Women's Basketball Slips Past Harris Stowe in Three Overtimes
MBU`s LaTrice McMichel broke her own single game scoring record of 40 points set in January 2005 when she poured in 46 points Tuesday night to fend off a pesky Harris Stowe State University team 87-84 in three overtimes. The Lady Spartans improve to 16-6 on the season and 5-2 in conference play. HSSU falls to 1-21 on the season and 0-7 in AMC play.
The Lady Hornets of HSSU jumped to a 13-0 lead and never looked back. HSSU led 40-31 at the half. MBU was able to tie the score in the second half on a McMichel lay up. On the ensuing play, McMichel received a blow to the head and was taken to the training room just four minutes into the second half. With McMichel out of the game, the Lady Hornets jumped to a 13 point lead with just four minutes remaining in the game. McMichel returned to action with just under four minutes to play and the crowd in MBU`s gymnasium gave her a rousing standing ovation. McMichel quickly turned the game around and MBU found themselves in a tie ball game with just seconds remaining. MBU missed a shot in regulation to force the first overtime. MBU again missed a game winning shot and both teams found themselves heading into the 50th minute of play. HSSU missed a shot at the end of the second overtime and the game went into its third overtime. MBU trailed 82-80 in the third overtime when MBU`s Angela Cerrito scored five unanswered points to give the Lady Spartans an 85-82 lead. HSSU cut the lead to one point and quickly fouled MBU`s Erin Bolger who stepped to the foul line & calmly sank two free throws to give MBU the 87-84 lead with 14 seconds to play. A last second three point attempt by HSSU sailed left and MBU escaped with the win.
"Harris Stowe came to play" said MBU head coach, Danny Wingate. "I remember saying to my assistant,`they are not missing tonight,' " It was just one of those games where big plays kept being made." HSSU connected on 13 three point attempts.
McMichel was 15 for 31 from the floor and 2 for 10 from behind the arc. McMichel sank 10 of 14 free throws. Cerrito chipped in 13 points for MBU. HSSU was lead by Shay Pettis, who poured in 29 points (nine three pointers) and Shayten Hearn who also had 29 points. Megan Brown pulled down 16 rebounds for MBU.
MBU will travel to William Woods University on Saturday February, 4th for a 2 PM tip off.
