Bowling Places Sixth in Their Last Tourney of the Season (February 23, 2006)

The MBU Spartan Bowling team participated in the last major tournament of the season. The conditions were difficult and scoring was very low, but the MBU team was able to grind out a sixth place qualifying position out of the 50 team field and headed into match play. The first round of match play pitted MBU against the highly ranked team from Wichita State University. In a very tight match, the Spartans upset the number two ranked team in the nation in three games in a best of five match. The next match against Morehead State University saw MBU fall…

Wrestling Concludes Season Ranked 16th Nationally (February 22, 2006)

The Missouri Baptist University Wrestling team ended the regular season ranked 16th in the country and had two wrestlers ranked nationally. MBU’s Nigel Kinworthy finished 8th at 184 lbs and Jared Bonnell finished 5th in the heavy weight division. The MBU Wrestling team will finish up their season March 3rd and 4th at the national meet in Sioux City Iowa.…

Men's Volleyball, Goedeker, NAIA Player of the Week (February 20, 2006)

MBU Men’s Volleyball Phil Goedeker has been named the NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Player of the Week. Goedeker, a senior Outside Hitter from St. Louis, has led his team to a 3-1 record this week with 66 kills, a .500 hitting percentage, and over four kills per game. He will graduate in April with an Accounting Degree. Phil holds the MBU all time record for kills and aces.…

Track Concludes Regular Season (February 20, 2006)

The MBU Men's and Women's Track & Field team ended their regular season this past weekend in strong fashion at the Central Missouri Classic. Many athletes made the most of this last opportunity to qualify for nationals. Margaret Nakintu had a strong day, winning the mile in a stadium record 4:45.63, the 800 in a stadium record 2:09.81, and anchoring the Distance Medley Relay to a stadium record 11:50.25. Ashley Harris and Kay-De Vaughn both jumped season bests in the triple jump, with Harris taking the event win. Coreen Ellis powered away from the field to claim an easy victory…

Wrestlers Place Five in Top Six (February 18, 2006)

The Missouri Baptist Spartan Wrestling Team returned from the Eastern Regional Championships with five of the seven wrestlers placing in the top six. This was the first time in the programs history that MBU put two wrestlers in the regional final. Only two other wrestlers from MBU had ever made it to the finals of the Regional Championships. Jared Bonnell and Nigel Kinworthy. Mike Aitch was 6th at 125 weight class, Chas Skelly was third at 149 weight class, John Wilcox was fifth at the 174 weight class, and Nigel Kinworthy was 2nd at the 184 weight class weight class,…

Athletics Honors 10-Year Old Cancer Patient at Basketball Game (February 16, 2006)

Missouri Baptist University Athletics honored ten year old Noah Donohoo at the Spartans home basketball game Tuesday February, 16th when MBU hosted the University of Illinois Springfield. MBU Director of Athletics, Thomas Smith, dedicated the evening’s competition as “Noah’s Night”. Young Noah was introduced as an honorary starter in the Spartans starting line up where he received an autographed MBU jersey. Noah then spent the remainder of the game on the bench with the Spartans as MBU competed in a key American Midwest Conference match up. Noah was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor on November 18th, 2005. Noah just…

Baseball Opens the Season With Two Wins (February 16, 2006)

The Boys of Summer opened up the 2006 campaign with two convincing victories over Concordia University (NB) 11-3 and 11-1 respectively. MBU opens the season up 2-0 while Concordia falls to 0-5. The winning pitcher in game one for the Spartans was David Federico. In game two, Matt Boyer got the call and the win for MBU. MBU will host Concordia in a double header again today with the first pitch of game one coming at 11 am. Track Teams Again Finish Strong (February 13, 2006)

The MBU Track & Field squad headed to Greencastle, Indiana this past weekend to compete in the Depauw Invitational. The women's took the team title with the men finishing a close second to SIU-Edwardsville. The women opened up with a meet and track record in the 4x200 meter relay. Lanece Clarke, Sherline Duncan, Sherine Shepherd, and Nickesha Anderson teamed up to run 1:41.51. The next race for the women saw freshman Betty Rotich win the 5000 in a meet record time of 16:54.14. Betty beat the second place finisher by over two and a half minutes. The Lady Spartans continued…

Men's Basketball Falls to Columbia College (February 10, 2006)

The Spartans were plagued by injuries and fouls, but still managed to remain even with Cougars through 40 minutes of play before falling to Columbia College 82-76 in overtime in Columbia MO. MBU had the ball at the end of regulation with the score tied at 66-66, but the game winning shot rimmed out and the game would be decided by an extra five minutes of play. The Cougars outscored MBU 16-10 in the extra period and pulled away for their sixth conference win in eight tries. MBU falls to 5-3 in the American Midwest Conference (19-7 overall). The Spartans…

Women's Basketball, McMichel, Named NAIA Player of the Week (February 8, 2006)

LaTrice McMichel of Missouri Baptist University has been named the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Player of the Week on February 8th. The 6-foot-1 inch senior guard from Indianapolis, IN, averaged 36 points as the Spartans went 2-0 on the week. She scored 46 points in the 87-84 home win against Harris- Stowe State University (Mo.). During that game she broke her own single-game scoring mark of 40. She then scored 27 points and had six rebounds in a 78-67 road win against William Woods University (Mo.). Men's Volleyball, Hickerson, Named National Player of the Week (February 7, 2006)

Bryce Hickerson of the Missouri Baptist University men’s volleyball team has been named the NAIA/Tachikara National Player of the Week. Hickerson is a senior outside hitter from Aurora, IL. MBU went 5-0 for the week and Hickerson has helped his team to an overall record of 6-1. He had 77 kills, .504 hitting percentage, 4 aces, 8 blocks, and 32 digs on the week. Men's Volleyball Open Season 6-1 (February 6, 2006)

The 3rd ranked Spartans of Missouri Baptist University went 5-0 this week pushing their overall record to 6-1. The team started the week with its conference opener on the road at St. Ambrose University. The team prevailed 30-26, 30-28, 26-30, 30-23 in a tough 3-1 victory. The team then traveled to Lindenwood University for four matches against other NAIA foes. The team defeated 5th ranked Missouri Valley 3-1, 28-30, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, then Peru State College 3-0, 30-23, 30-24, 30-25 on Friday. Men's Basketball Rolls Past HLG (February 6, 2006)

The Spartans improve to 19-6 on the season and 5-2 in league play after an 80-72 home victory Saturday against Hannibal LaGrange College. HLG falls to 9-16 and 3-4 in the AMC. HLG shot 58% from the three point arc in the first half while draining 11 first half three pointers for a 42-36 half time lead. HLG cooled off in the second half as they only connected on three more three point attempts and the Spartans took advantage. Women's Basketball Slips Past Harris Stowe in Three Overtimes (February 1, 2006)

MBU`s LaTrice McMichel broke her own single game scoring record of 40 points set in January 2005 when she poured in 46 points Tuesday night to fend off a pesky Harris Stowe State University team 87-84 in three overtimes. The Lady Spartans improve to 16-6 on the season and 5-2 in conference play. HSSU falls to 1-21 on the season and 0-7 in AMC play. The Lady Hornets of HSSU jumped to a 13-0 lead and never looked back.
