Men's Soccer Splits weekend Trip

In their first game of the season MBU rallied from a two goal deficit in the first half to defeat St. Ambrose University 3-2 in overtime. St. Ambrose got the lead first in the 30 minutes in when Greg Lehman touch it over the MBU defender and shot it past the goalie for the lead. St. Ambrose doubled the lead on Greg Lehman second goal in the 55th minute. The goal came form a counterattack after MBU gave the ball away. Junior Forward Rackley Thomas and junior midfielder Hernan Merino led a spirited comeback for the Spartans. The Spartans first goal came from a great build-up and finished with freshman Forward Brock Chatman laying the ball off for Hernan Merino, who made a one-touch pass to Rackley Thomas who buried the ball past the keeper in the 67th minute. MBU kept attacking and was rewarded with four minutes to play when Hernan Merino picked up a layoff from Rackley Thomas and blasted one in the upper corner to tie the game. It took MBU 30 seconds into overtime to win the game. Again Spartans scored from a great build-up. Brock Chatman received a ball on the top of the box and slide it wide to junior Midfielder Andrew Fowler who onetimed it across the box to Hernan Merino who slid it home for the game winner. MBU outshot St. Ambrose 17-6 in the game. Hernan Merino had two goals and an assist, Rackley Thomas had a goal and an assist, Brock Chatman had two assist, Andrew fowler added a game winning assist.

In the Saturday’s game MBU ran out of gas and luck as the fell to Grandview College 2-0. In the first half both teams had several good attempts wasted and MBU freshman Goalkeeper Juan Villacres made a good save to keep the game scoreless at half. The second half saw MBU create the first chance but junior Rackley Thomas headed a cross wide from freshman Brock Chatman. In the 65th minute Grandview got on board with goal from a scramble in the box. Then three minutes later MBU missed a great chance to tie when a corner kick fell to junior Defender Michael Keane in the box whose shot was cleared off the line from a Grandview defender. In the 72nd minute Grandview put the game away when the scored on a 25 yard free kick outsite the box. MBU record is now 1-1.
