Men's Soccer Opens Up AMC Play With Win at HLG

The Spartans started out sluggish, but turned things around in the second half en route to a 2-0 conference win over Hannibal LaGrange College.

MBU could not get on board until the 32nd minute when Spartans junior midfielder Hernan Merino booted in the first goal from 45 yards out. MBU got their second goal five minutes later when Brock Chatman slid a ball over to MBU junior Gunther Koste, who scored his first goal of the season. MBU goalkeeper, Juan Villacres recorded nine saves and his fourth shutout on the season. The Spartans improve to 6-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

“I am very disappointed at how bad we played in the first half “stated MBU Head Coach, Jared Embick. “We were sloppy and undisciplined. We did none of the things we talked about or help us get on a five game win streak. I give credit to Hannibal; they came ready to play and wanted it more in the first half. We were fortunate to come out of the half at 0-0. The second half our guys responded and played with more energy, and heart. We stepped up the pressure and were able to force them into mistakes which we were able to take advantage of. In the end, to win a conference game at Hannibal is not easy and we have not done well here in the last five years. We will take a win any way we can get it.”

MBU’s next game is at Harris-Stowe State College at 4:00 pm.
