MBU's Tom Smith Named Region V Athletic Director of the Year
Missouri Baptist University Director of Athletics, Thomas Smith, has been announced the 2005 Region V Athletic Director of the year. The honor was released July 29, 2005.
Smith’s name was submitted to the Region V Chair and voted upon by the Region V Athletic Directors. Names are then submitted to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national office and the honors are announced from there.
Smith, who assumed the position of MBU’s Director of Athletics in January of 2003, has brought many changes to the Missouri Baptist University Athletic Department. Among some of the notable contributions to the department; Smith has increased the MBU athletic enrollment by over 290 athletes through additional startup programs. He added a total of 21 coaches and supporting staff to the MBU athletic program. He has formed mandatory study halls for athlete’s that has increased the overall athletic grade point average to 2.69. Smith has been instrumental in the planning of a new Athletic/Student Activity Center (plans for the development can be found on MBU’s home athletic page). Under the leadership of Smith, MBU has produced eight conference coaches of the year, four regional coaches of the year, 40 NAIA All Americans and 15 NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
