<< Back to International Study
Missouri Baptist University's International Program offers a unique opportunity to study, not only your degree requirements, but other cultures and countries in a way that only real life experience can offer. As advances in technology cause the distance between countries and cultures to continually decrease, we can no longer afford to ignore the rich heritage of our global neighbors. Missouri Baptist University is strongly committed to this truth, not only from an educational approach, but a spiritual one as well. When Jesus Christ commanded His followers to "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." NIV (Matthew 28:19, 20a ) we believe that He was speaking to us today. The Faculty and Staff of Missouri Baptist University strive to reach beyond the walls of our institution in obedience to this command. Through our Study International Programs, Missions Programs, International Recruiting Programs, Student Ministries, Faculty Exchanges and the daily interaction that takes place among the twenty two countries currently represented by students and faculty on our campus, we offer an almost endless opportunity for students to put feet to their faith.
Study International
Through our Study International Program, Missouri Baptist University offers
you the rare experience of living and studying in a country where Christianity
is considered subversive. Our agreement with Hong Kong Baptist University
allows you to live and study for a semester in this previously closed country
and receive credit, based on the successful completion of the program, as
if you were here on our main campus. The Study International Program is
open to any student who has successfully completed at least two semesters
at Missouri Baptist University, and is in good standing with the college.
Hong Kong Baptist University
Hong Kong Baptist University is centrally located on the Kowloon side of
Hong Kong. While it still retains the name "Baptist" HKBU is currently owned
by the Chinese government. The University has three separate but closely
adjacent campuses: the Ho Sin Hang Campus, Shaw Campus, and Baptist University
Road Campus, all within easy walking distance of one another. All buildings
in the University have either been constructed or completely renovated during
the past ten years. Traveling to and from the campus and around Hong Kong
is very easy by means of public transport, which is both convenient and
inexpensive. Options include: the underground railway (MTR), buses, taxis,
ferries, and trains.
Academic Organization
Academic programs are organized in a way that is very similar to North American
colleges and Universities. Their programs are tailor-made and highly structured,
placing emphasis on coherence, progression, and integration within a three
year time span. The education system in Hong Kong at present provides for
13 years of schooling: 6 years at primary school, 5 years at secondary school,
and 2 years of matriculation. HKBU's undergraduate degree programs follow
a British pattern of three years duration. It is due to this variance that
American students are required to complete one full year of study at their
home institution. Our Sophomore year is generally aligned with their Freshman
year. In addition, you must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on
a 4.0 scale. It is preferred that you be a Junior or Senior in order to
participate in this program.
How much will it cost?
Aside from the current tuition cost, which can be obtained from the Study Abroad Office, there are very few student fees and almost no lab fees. You should estimate about $250 for books. The balance of your cost will vary according to the choices you make. You can estimate the cost of meals at $400 to $550 a month, local transportation $50 to $100 a month, entertainment $50 to $150, miscellaneous $100 to $150 a month. If you currently receive Federal grants or loans these may be applied the same as if you were studying in the U.S. If you are currently receiving institutional scholarships, there is a provision to assist with covering those deductions. There is also some financial aid for travel expense to and from Hong Kong. For more details, contact Mr. Bob Kilzer, the Director of Study Abroad at (314) 392-2112.
Note: these estimates may change based on the current currency exchange rate.
Academic Choices
HKBU provides opportunities for undergraduate studies in about 40 majors
leading to the award of degrees including: Bachelor of Arts, Business Administration,
Bachelor of Science, Social Sciences, and Social Work. Subject choices are
not restricted to your major and you are not required to follow Hong Kong
student schedules. All subject areas are open for enrollment, except: those
that are taught only in Cantonese (unless you are fluent in Cantonese) or
where there are not matching prerequisite courses available at MBU. All
international students are required to take CHI 2000, Understanding Chinese
Culture. Also available is LANG 1000 Introductory Mandarin for Non-Chinese
Speaking Students, which is taught from an English language base.
