A large number of college and university students have not decided major they will choose.  They may have something in mind as first-year students, but the majority of them will change their major at least once (if not several times) before they graduate.  This is not true of students who come preparing for ministry.

However, a question arises as to why one would want to be a religion major; or, better yet, why should one be a religion major?  In addressing this question, several thoughts come to mind.

First, a religion major is the practical choice for students called to full-time ministry.  They feel the need to increase their knowledge of the Scriptures and hone their Bible skills as well as prepare for other fields of ministry to which they might feel led.

In addition, a religion major is essential for students wishing to expand their knowledge of hermeneutics or Biblical languages.  Here they will be involved in concentrated studies that will prepare them to walk adequately in these disciplines.

Today there is a want for God-called men and women for Christian service in every denomination.  If one should be a religion major, it just might lead to his or her “hearing” the call of God into some field of ministry.

One final thought: the studies a person takes for a major in religion will prepare them for the role they have in God’s eternal purpose and design for his or her life.  There is no other field of study that challenges individuals like religion and theology.  It is true that a study in any field of education, when devoted to God as Lord over all, will be a blessing to people.  However, the opportunities offered to people devoted to Christian ministry through Biblical studies are incomparable.
