The Department of Music offers opportunity for participation in musical performances and membership in several performance ensembles. Participation is open to any student, regardless of major. Listed below are the ensembles and their entrance requirements. For further information, contact the ensemble director. Also listed are other performance venues offered in the Department of Music.
MBU University Band
Membership in the Concert band is open to all students, faculty and staff.
One should register for the class if credit is desired. Concert Band meets
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 to 1:20 p.m. For further information, contact
Dr. Kevin Cox, Director of Bands.
MBU Jazz Band
Participation in the Jazz Band is by audition only. Auditions can be
held at any time during the year, including during music scholarship auditions.
Credit is available for participation. The Jazz band meets Tuesday and Thursday
mornings from 8:00 to 9:20 a.m. For further information, contact Dr. Kevin
Cox, director.
Chamber Ensemble
Students may participate in small instrumental ensembles, such as string
quartets, wind quartets, etc. These are organized through the band program,
under the direction of Dr. Kevin Cox. Anyone interested in such an ensemble
should contact Dr. Kevin Cox.
MBU Ringers
Membership in the MBU Ringers is by consent of the director. Previous
experience not required. The MBU Ringers meet Mondays, 3:00-5:00 p.m. For
information, contact Dr. Cathy Benton.
MBU Chorale
Membership in the Chorale is open to students, faculty, staff or community
members and requires no audition.. One hour credit per semester may be obtained
by registering for the class. The Chorale meets12:00 – 12:50 p.m.,
Monday, Wednesday and Friday. For further information, contact Dr. Larry
Smith.
MBU Choral Society
The MBU Choral Society is open to students, faculty, staff and community
members and requires no audition. For information concerning rehearsal dates
and times, contact the director, Dr. Larry Smith.
MBU Chamber Singers
Participation in the Chamber Singers is by audition only. Initial audition
is held in the spring semester and during music scholarship auditions, with
possible auditions for needed parts at the beginning of the fall term. Chamber
Singers meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:00 to 3:30 and receive one-hour credit.
Scholarships are available for participation. Must be available for travel
and touring. For further information, contact the director, Dr. Larry Smith.
Allusion
Allusion is a vocal jazz group of eight singers,
a sound technician, and instrumental trio. Individual
scholarships are given for participation, but
membership is required for nine months. Auditions
for singers are held each spring. Auditions for
instrumentalists or sound technicians are held
when openings occur, audition times arranged by the
director. Detailed information about requirements for
all auditions may be found on the Allusion website.

with questions. Audition forms and times are
obtained by contacting the Office of Admissions.
Rehearsals are held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30-11:00
and receive one-hour credit. Must be available
for travel and touring.
Fall Musical
Each fall the Department of Fine Arts produces a musical with participation
open to the entire campus: students, faculty and staff. Auditions are announced
and held within the first week or two weeks of school. Interested participants
should watch for audition information posted on campus and in the Chapel
Bulletin. You may also contact Ms. Joy Powell, Drama Director, for further
information or the Musical Director, Mrs. Pat Lacey. Students may receive
one hour credit for their participation. This credit may be applied to the
Theater Minor.
Opera Workshop
One need not plan to have a career in opera to enjoy Opera Workshop.
Short scenes from operas are chosen to fit the abilities of the participants.
At the end of the term, a scene recital is held. Students study aspects of
performance and staging, as well as prepare the music and scenes. Performances
are in English and utilize staging, costumes and scenery if appropriate.
Opera Workshop is offered in the Spring semester. For further information,
