Finding Beauty and Goodness
I recently had the opportunity to attend several fine arts events. The University has had concerts by the Concert Band, In Charactre, Chamber Singers , and the Jazz Band. I saw a traveling production of The Color Purple, and on a recent Sunday morning our church celebrated Children’s Sabbath with concerts by our Children’s Choir and Children’s Handbells. At each of these events I was reminded of the incredible nurturing, healing, and inspiring power of music and art. For many people life right now resembles a train wreck. There are all sorts of problems with the economy that are causing real angst. The political campaign is fueled with much bitterness and rancor between the candidates and their supporters. There is uneasiness about the future. The fact is, we are challenged to find beauty and goodness in the world in difficult times. However, amidst this backdrop of pain we can, if we will, open up and see, hear and feel God’s beauty as it breaks in through those whom He has gifted with talents that go beyond our simple understanding. Art and music do not solve our problems but they do remind us of the One who can, and they make difficult times more tolerable.
